    • Systems involved: If it’s purely within Dataverse, a plugin keeps it self-contained. If it involves multiple systems (say CRM and an ERP and maybe a database), a combination might be needed – perhaps a flow or Logic App to orchestrate across systems, or a plugin that kicks off an Azure Function for the integration part.

    • Volume and Performance: For high-volume operations (thousands of events per hour) – plugins are usually more efficient and scalable within Dataverse (less overhead than Flow which has per-run overhead). But if the processing per event is heavy, offloading to Azure might be wiser to not strain CRM’s resources.

    • Licensing and Cost: Using flows or Logic Apps might incur costs or use runs from allocated quotas. Azure Functions have their cost model (consumption). Plugins are “free” in the sense they come with CRM. If cost is a factor and the team has dev capability, a plugin might be preferred to avoid high Power Automate runs cost.

    • Isolation and Manageability: Sometimes we choose Azure Functions to isolate a very complex integration so that it can be managed/deployed separately from CRM, and use CI/CD pipelines of its own.
      In summary, as an architect I weigh functional need (transactional? real-time?), non-functional aspects (performance, scalability), team skillset, and maintenance. Often the best solution uses a mix: e.g., plugin for core logic and an Azure Function for heavy external processing, coordinated by a queue. Or a flow calls a Custom API (implemented by a plugin) to perform a complex action. The key is to use each tool for what it’s best at while ensuring the overall solution is reliable and easy to maintain.
